Our History

The Assocation was formed by a steering group of tenants and residents of the Pennyland and Mount Vernon Estates in Thurso, when the then owners, the UKAEA, decided to put the estates up for sale on the open market. At that time this consisted of 350 tenanted houses and 474 rented garages, several common landscaped areas, and retained burdens for over 650 (approx) privately owned houses. The newly formed Housing Association successfully bid for the estates, and we took ownership on 24 January 1994.

In 1997 we were appointed as Agents by the Highland Council to establish and administer the new Care & Repair Scheme in Caithness. To complement this service we set up a Handyperson scheme in 2005 to provide small repair services to the disabled and/or elderly residents in Caithness and Sutherland. Funded by the Highland Council this service continues to grow and in 2010 saw the addition of an adaptations store to provide services for Social Work.

In 2006 we gained charitable status and formed a subsidiary company Pentland Community Enterprises to manage our extensive stock of garages. We are further developing this company to establish a suite of social enterprises offering a wide range of service and training opportunities to our communities.

We are currently members of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations and Employers in Voluntary Housing, and hold representative Board Membership of the Highland Small Communities Trust and the Highland Housing and Community Care Trust. In 2005 we formed the Highland Housing Alliance in partnership with the 4 other Highland based housing associations and The Highland Small Communities Housing Trust. We are also a member of Caithness Voluntary Group and are represented on several other Highland and Caithness committees and voluntary organisations.

Over the last 3 years we have responded to the needs of our tenants and sought to improve our service delivery via improvements in technology and in our management practices. We are committed to affordable rents and offer some of the lowest rents in Scotland. We are also one of the highest performing rural Association's in Scotland. We do this by being local, understanding the needs of our communities and focusing on our performance targets.
